About Sarah's House

A Message From The Chairman

In my 24 years as Mohave County Attorney, one of the most frustrating and heart wrenching situations I encountered was the re-victimization of individuals by a criminal justice system that was focused on arresting and punishing criminals, often at the expense of the dignity and rights of crime victims.  It was not unusual for a rape or molestation victim to be moved from place to place for interviews, medical exams and processing, depersonalizing their pain and requiring that they relive their trauma over and over again.

The concept of Sarah's House evolved from a partnership of police agencies and the County Attorney's Office aimed at providing one location where all victim interviews, evaluations, and medical testing could take place.  It was modeled after a similar program in Mesa and was the first such rural program in the state.  Sarah's House activities were funded primarily by state and federal grants; staffing was provided by the County Attorney's Victim Assistance Program, law enforcement and volunteers, including doctors and nurses who performed necessary medical procedures.

The activities at Sarah's House were so embraced and supported by the community that Sarah's House Foundation was formed and incorporated as a non-profit to enable businesses and individuals supporting our work to participate financially.  Money donated to Sarah's House, however, would have been subject to budget and appropriation by the County, whereas the Foundation is independent from the County and can manage our resources exclusively for our victim-oriented programs.  This has enabled us to provide a broad and expanding range of services to both victims of crime and circumstance ranging from sexual assault and domestic violence to automobile accidents and pro-active services for families and seniors.

Through the generosity of our supporters, we will soon complete construction of our new 2600 sq. ft. home on Airway Avenue in Kingman.

As you can see, we have set lofty goals and have many challenges ahead but with the continued support of our community and businesses, I'm certain that they can be accomplished and provide a true enhancement to our citizens and the overall quality of life in Mohave County.

Your ideas, support, and participation are always appreciated.

Sincerely,

William J. Ekstrom
Chairman, Sarah's House Foundation
